For a skilled IT professional, managing a virtualized data center should be pretty cut and dry, right?
Wrong.
As NetApp’s Brian Gracely points out, it’s sometimes difficult to tell where one function stops and another begins. Thus, data center responsibilities - as they pertain to technology - become blurred, even confusing. Add cloud computing to the mix and the situation can get even messier.
While this discussion is up for debate in many IT circles, Gracely offers some advice on how to deal with a blurred data center. Mind you - this advice applies to the technical side of operations. Not data center cost reduction. Not infrastructure optimization. Still though, this advice may be priceless - especially if you’re having trouble seeing the big picture inside your data center.
- Stop looking at your area of focus as a silo. Start figuring how to get better educated on the pieces that interconnect to your existing area (applications, computing, networking, storage).
- Start thinking about the changes that occur with virtualization (mobility of applications; new models of capacity planning; automated high availability, etc.) and build out the bigger picture of how this will effect the entire data center.
- Once you know how the data center will change, go back and look at project requests that you had from your Business Units or Customers (and said “Can’t do it”) and consider how many of them are now possible in a virtualized data center. Maybe server lead-times are now 1/10th what they were before. Maybe the cost of a new Application/Server/Storage deployment is 1/5th what it was before. Maybe the ability to deploy a remote-worker securely and within regulatory guidelines is now possible. Start considering how you’ll take this new capability back to those business-decision makers.
How well does this advice service you?
We’d love your feedback.
