Virtualization and Data Protection – How is it being done?

These days IT organizations are virtualizing their server environments exponentially. More and more virtual machines are being added each and every day. The question I have is, what are people using to backup their VM environments? There are many well known products on the market today that will provide different levels of protection. There are products such as Backup Exec, NetBackup,  and EMC NetWorker that allow their customers to use “traditional” backup methods, and there more VMware-centric methods, such as VCB backups. There are also other products that focus specifically on VM backups such as VEEAM, vRangerPro, and esXpress . After talking with some of our customers I have found that some have incorporated the newer products such as esXpress, yet others are still continuing to backup each virtual machine as if they were physical servers. So how are companies determining the best method for their environments?

Thus far, I have found that this is not such an easy question to answer. Some companies simply have long standing policies and procedures that make it difficult to get buy-in for any other solutions.  Others are so busy that making these changes is not on their list of priorities right now. So they continue to backup their environments the traditional way. I am also seeing situations where smaller companies are able to adopt more mainstream methods because they don’t have all that red tape to break through to put the newer technologies in place. Any company who hasn’t made the shift to VMware-centric methods is sure to be negatively impacting their environments. Without careful planning of backup schedules, the use of traditional methods can severely hurt performance and rob VM environments of valuable resources. As companies begin to streamline their budgets and look for ways to save money I have a feeling different methods will be explored. Time will tell where companies take their backups in the virtual realm, but one thing is for sure, virtualization is changing how IT organizations manage their infrastructure.
